Travel speed controls how quickly the nozzle moves between extrusion paths when it is not depositing material. A sensible setting can reduce the time available for oozing, but speed alone will not fix every stringing or print-quality problem.
What does travel speed control?
It governs nonprinting moves between extrusion paths. The nozzle might finish a letter, move across a gap, then begin the next letter without laying material during that travel. This differs from the speed used while depositing a wall.
On short moves, travel acceleration and the machine's movement limits determine whether the requested speed is actually reached. Two printers with the same travel setting can therefore behave differently. Preserve the manufacturer's profile as your starting point instead of copying another machine's number.
In short: set the pace the machine can actually use, then inspect the print.
Which defect are you trying to change?
| Symptom | Investigate first |
|---|---|
| Fine threads across open gaps | Moisture, temperature, retraction and travel time |
| A missing line after travel | Excess pullback or a feeding problem |
| Scratches across a top face | Planned travel path, raised edges or nozzle clearance |
| A shifted section after a fast move | Collision or motion-system trouble |
Stringing is a common reason to tune travel, but each symptom needs a different response. If a new setting creates layer shifts or abnormal noise, restore the baseline and inspect the machine. Do not keep increasing speed to hide a hardware fault.
If stringing is the main problem, also see our guide on how to fix stringing in 3D prints.
How do you run a useful travel-speed test?
Choose a small two-tower test or a short section of the model that repeatedly fails. Save the original profile, and keep material, temperature, orientation and retraction distance unchanged. Try a modest speed increase, such as 10%, only if the printer's permitted range allows it.
Compare the threads and the first deposited line after every move. Keep the lower setting if both tests look alike; a larger number offers little value when it does not change the result. Confirm the choice on the real object before committing to a long print.

In short: a useful test compares identical geometry with one changed control.
When should you change the travel path instead?
Some slicers offer combing, which keeps selected travel moves within printed areas. Others provide perimeter-avoidance controls. Inspect the slicer preview to see which surfaces the nozzle crosses before turning these features on.
Z hop briefly raises the nozzle during a move. It can provide clearance in suitable cases, but adds motion and is not a substitute for fixing curled edges or excess extrusion. Use the machine's supported settings and check that the extra motion helps your specific model.
What if strings remain at every travel speed?
Check filament moisture and nozzle temperature against the material guidance. A suspect spool can continue oozing across the whole test, while a hot nozzle may leak more than expected. Deal with these causes before making extreme changes to movement or retraction.

On a personalised nameplate, travel paths between separate letters can leave visible threads. A better path or a material check may clean them up without changing the overall print pace.
Frequently asked questions
What is travel speed in 3D printing?
It is the requested speed for nozzle movement when no material is being deposited.
Does faster travel reduce stringing?
It can reduce the time available for oozing, but moisture, temperature and retraction still matter.
Can travel speed cause layer shifts?
An excessive motion request or a collision can contribute to missed movement. Check the machine and restore a supported profile.
Is travel speed the same as retraction speed?
No. Travel moves the printhead; retraction pulls filament back through the feeder.
Should I enable Z hop?
Only when the added clearance addresses a real collision risk and the printer supports the setting.
